In the Every Day Math program math games are an important part in teaching students important math concepts. Some of these games can easily be played at home with your child.
Top-It
This is a game for two people. Deal out a deck of number cards to the two players. The players place their stack face down before them and turn over their top card. Each player reads aloud the number on the card. Whoever turned over the larger number keeps both cards. If the cards match, they are put aside and the next card is turned over. The player with the highest card takes both the tie cards and the new pair. When all the cards are used up, the player with the most cards wins.
Penny-Nickle Exchange
This game can be played with 2-3 people. Put twenty pennies and ten nickels in the middle of the players. Take turns rolling a die and collected the number of pennies that matches the number on the die. When a player gets five pennies he is to exchange them for a nickel. The player with the most nickels at the end wins.
Penny-Plate Game
This game is for two people. You will need ten pennies and a paper or plate. One person hides some of the ten pennies under a plate, while the other player looks away. Then once the pennies are hidden the second player needs to figure out how many are hidden under the plate by counting the remaining pennies. This game is to help with addition and the concept of counting up to find answers to math problems.
